Photo puzzles designed to be kept

A photo puzzle should do two things well: print your image faithfully and produce a finished object worth the time it took to assemble. Most photo puzzle services manage neither. Puzzably starts from a different question: what would make this worth framing when it is done?

The answer, at every step, is the same. Better board. Tighter cutting. A frame-compatible finished size. A sleeve box that looks intentional on a shelf. These are not upgrades you pay extra for; they are how every Puzzably photo puzzle is made.

How it works

1. Upload your photo

Drag in a JPG, PNG, or TIFF from any device. We accept high-resolution files from phones, cameras, and scanners. The upload tool shows you a preview and lets you confirm your crop before you proceed.

2. We check it before it prints

Every order goes through a pre-press review: colour profile, sharpness at 530x390mm output, and crop position. If your image is likely to print soft or cropped unexpectedly, we tell you before it goes to the printer.

3. Printed and cut on premium board

Your photo is printed at 300dpi on thick chipboard, laminated for a soft-touch surface, and die-cut to precise tolerances. Pieces click firmly and stay seated; the assembled puzzle lies flat.

4. Ships in a giftable sleeve box

The finished puzzle travels in a matte sleeve box with your image on the lid. Production takes 3 to 5 business days, US shipping adds 2 to 5 days. It arrives ready to give, ready to build, and ready to display when done.

Photo puzzle as a gift

Custom photo puzzles are consistently rated among the most memorable personalised gifts, and for a reason that is easy to underestimate: they take time to engage with. A photo printed on a mug is glanced at. A photo puzzle is assembled over an evening, then kept. That longevity is why they land differently.

What makes a photo puzzle gift land even better is the quality of the object. When the box looks deliberate and the pieces are satisfying to handle, the experience before the first piece goes down is already good. That is the gap Puzzably is built to fill.

Popular photo puzzle gifts:

  • Family portraits. Multi-generational photos, holiday shots, reunion pictures. The 500 piece option is popular for gifts because most recipients will actually complete it.
  • Pet portraits. Dogs and cats especially. A well-lit pet photo on premium board, framed after assembly, becomes wall art that also tells a story about the animal.
  • Travel photos. A meaningful landscape or city shot from a trip, assembled and framed at home, does what prints do without the cost of large-format printing.
  • Milestone moments. Weddings, engagements, new home, first baby. The sleeve box packaging means no additional wrapping required.
  • Couple photos. Anniversaries, Valentine's Day, birthday surprises. A photo you were both in, turned into something you build together.

The 530x390mm finished size matches a standard 50x70cm frame, so if you want to mount the completed puzzle you are not hunting for a custom frame.

500 piece or 1000 piece photo puzzle?

The right answer depends on who the puzzle is for and what the photo looks like.

500 pieces is the better gift choice. It is completable in a single evening for most adults, which means it actually gets assembled rather than sitting in the box. Larger pieces also show photographic detail more clearly, which matters for portraits and close-up shots.

1000 pieces is for the puzzle enthusiast, for images with a lot of tonal variation and detail, and for buyers who want the assembled result to have more presence on a wall. The extra piece count rewards patience.

If in doubt, choose 500 pieces. Puzzles that get finished are more likely to end up framed.

Displaying your completed photo puzzle

The 530x390mm finished size was chosen specifically to match standard 50x70cm frames. Once assembled, apply puzzle glue (available at most craft stores) to the face of the puzzle, let it cure overnight, then mount it in the frame. No backing board is needed for most standard frames at this size.

If you prefer not to glue and frame, the sleeve box stores the puzzle flat. Many customers keep the box on a bookshelf or side table as a display object in its own right, since the image is printed on the lid.

Puzzably also produces original artist-designed puzzles in styles that work as wall art, including sunflowers, ocean scenes, and Paris streetscapes. These are designed first as display objects, second as puzzles, and are worth browsing if you want something for your own walls rather than a photo gift.

Our promise

Your photo goes through a pre-press review before it prints: a colour profile check, a sharpness pass at full output size, and a crop confirmation. If the image will not hold up at 530x390mm, we tell you before we print, not after the box arrives.

Each puzzle is made on premium board, cut into 500 or 1000 pieces, and finished to sit on display in a clear acrylic case. If a puzzle arrives damaged or misprinted, we reprint it.

Frequently asked questions

What photo resolution do I need for a sharp result?

For a clean print at 530x390mm we recommend a source file of at least 1500px on the short edge. Smartphone photos taken in the last few years typically exceed this. We run a sharpness check before printing and flag any file that is likely to print below our quality standard.

Can I use a scanned photo or film image?

Yes. Scan at 600dpi or higher for a physical print, and as high as your scanner allows for film negatives and slides. Old scanned photos with grain or colour shift can still make excellent puzzles; the texture of an older image can add character to the assembled result.

Is the packaging suitable as a gift box?

Yes. The matte sleeve box with your image on the lid is designed to be given directly. You can add a personalised message at checkout and we will include a printed card inside the box.

What if I am unhappy with the print quality?

If the printed image is materially different from what your uploaded file should produce, we reprint and reship at no cost. We ask for a photo of the defect. We cannot accept returns on made-to-order custom items, but print errors and production defects are always our responsibility.

Can I order a photo puzzle in bulk?

Yes, for events, corporate gifts, or family reunion orders. Contact us for bulk pricing; minimum quantities and lead times vary by order size.

How is a Puzzably photo puzzle different from a Walgreens or CVS photo puzzle?

Retail photo puzzles from pharmacy chains are optimised for same-day convenience and low price points. They typically print at lower resolutions on thinner board and in smaller finished sizes. Puzzably's 530x390mm premium board puzzle is a different product category: it is designed to be a kept object, not a same-day novelty. If speed and cost are the priority, pharmacy options have their place. If quality and longevity are the priority, Puzzably is built for that.
